Stress can affect many systems of the body and if allowed to become long or chronic, then damage may occur. This damage may affect health and wellbeing, which can make life harder within work, home life and relationships.
It is important that people recognise how they are feeling and the symptoms of stress, then make time in their lives to do things that can change how they feel and perform their daily tasks.
Symptoms of stress: Increased Alcohol intake, increased release of anger, Lack of motivation in down time, Changes in eating habits, increased use of stimulants.
A lot of people lead such busy lives that they get used to the sensation of discomfort or pain and forget what it feels like to be pain free. This is when the damage becomes chronic and will take a lot longer for the client to heal, once a constructive course of treatment begins.
It is better to try to fit some sort of relaxation time into our daily or weekly schedule, to get the optimum health benefits with positive results.
Regular Exercise, Healthy eating, Complimentary Therapies, Meditation, These are some of the ways that can help release tension and if applied regularly, can stave off chronic illness or injury.
I have treated a number of clients with Reflexology who have symptoms of stress, some without even recognising it and are now making time each week to look after their wellbeing.
Reflexology not only relaxes a person and gives time to put their feet up, but also allows them to feel the areas of their body that feel ‘out of balance’, be it through physical or emotional stress.

Stress in the workplace causes the `biggest loss of working days, which is a big problem in the UK. In 2015/16 there were 11 million days lost to stress and this affects both the employee through loss of quality of life, and the employer through productivity.
Stress can be associated with chronic illness such as heart disease, anxiety, depression and in some cases, musculoskeletal problems; causing long term damage to the heart, blood pressure, immune, digestive and reproductive systems, stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and fertility problems. Stress costs money.
Stress is a physiological reaction when the body can no longer cope with pressure, be it from work, emotional issues or psychological issues. Stress causes the body to react to undue pressure by causing an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and sweating which intern causes a decrease in digestion and reproduction.
The body is designed to cope with short term stress, to cope with immediate danger, allowing the ‘fight or flight’ response, where chemical changes allow the body to prepare for a physical reaction, be it fighting or running from danger.
Exercise is a good way of relieving stress but is not for everyone, so it is important to recognise what it is that helps you to relax and have time to rest.
Reflexology is a way to relax as it means that you are sitting still for up to an hour, having your feet massaged, which works on the nervous system to calm and relax, improves blood and lymph flow to improve oxygen levels and removal of body waste; resulting in a happier state of mind and a feeling of wellbeing.
